Musical Monday Inspiration

Hey everyone!  Hope you all had a relaxing weekend!  Anyone do anything exciting?

You may have noticed I've decided to move my regular music inspiration post from Tuesday to Monday.  It's just that Mondays seem like a perfect day for musical sharing, don't you think?

So without further ado I bring you my latest find.  This group, The Avett Brothers, had a free video out on Itunes a few weeks ago and I gave it a shot.  And loved it.  It was different enough to really spark my interest and I bought the entire album.  It definitely has a different kind of vibe that just oozes inspiration and seems thought provoking.

What do you think?

escape from hermitage!

Sounds like a great book, doesn't it?  No?  Boring?  Hmmm...

Well, it would appear that my escape from hermitage is complete and I'm back in the wonderful blogosphere!  I have to say, I've seriously missed my bloggy buddies the last few weeks and am in serious surfing withdrawal.

With our internet back up and running, things this week have returned to normal.  And it really got me thinking a bit.  I mean, there are quite a few of us writer's out there, right?  And we spend soooo much time alone in our own heads:  thinking, brainstorming,  and writing, that, well, it seems all too easy to slip back into the life of a hermit from time to time.

Actually, part of me thinks enjoying the hermit life is a must for a writer.  It's not really a group sport, well, critiquing kind of is, but the initial act is totally solo for the most part.  But I also believe it's just as important to get out and live life and be careful to share it with others and not spend too much time alone.  So, it's a dilemma, right?  Okay, not really a dilemma, more of a nice balancing act we all perform everyday.  We walk the tight rope between being a hermit & finding time to ourselves and living life with our friends & family.

During my recent internet outage a funny thing happened.  At first, it popped back for maybe a few hours and we thought everything was fixed.  I was thrilled to log on, email my friends, and catch up with things that were too hard to do from my phone.  BUT moments later it rained again, and it was down.

So for the better part of a week and a few days our home was without internet access as we tried to figure out the problem.  (Still not sure it won't go down again in the next storm.  Apparently our box is located across the street and it floods when we get a bunch of rain.  Our builder is supposed to fix it but I have a feeling we are a low priority.)

Sorry - you know how I like to ramble - just go with it - there's no use fighting it - ask the hubs.  SO it officially came back on this past Tuesday.  And I had to question myself today...why the long wait to post???  Exactly.  Like all routines it was much too easy to fall in and out of.  Did I miss everyone and their fantabulous comments?  Most definitely!!!  But was I in a rush to get back and type something up?  Strangely, no.

Because I'd had a taste of hermitage and I kind of liked it.  I got some writing done during my vacay and found time to exercise and catch up on some great books.  The tot and I got back into our habit of reading books before bed, which I never realized I'd totally been missing with useless television programs.  (I know, I know...the television and I have a very serious love/hate relationship.  Admittedly it's ALL my fault...I'm quite bipolar on how I feel about watching it and my opinion changes regularly.)

SO, much like riding a bicycle, I'm getting back into the swing of things.  Wow.  That was a strange playground scene inducing sentence there.  Special.  See what happens when I take a break?  LOL.

But what about you???  Please tell me there are others out there that struggle off and on with the wonderful land of hermitville!!!  I refuse to believe I am alone!!  Although if I find myself there, we all know I may possibly be content, for like, a week.  And then I need mad love.

NOLA trip!

Well our internet is still down and we do indeed think it's the same problem as last time.  Calling today to get a tech out so until then I'll borrow internet connections here and there while I can.

I'm also on vacay next week so I plan on being unplugged and getting some things done around the house in a leisurely manner!  Perhaps some kitchen painting???  I know, I know.  I party like a rock star.  In my defense, we may squeeze in a trip to the beach and maybe a day or two in the mountains but we'll see how we feel.  Sometimes a week of being home and doing what I want is EVEN better than a vacation.  Sometimes.

But on to my blog photo tour of New Orleans!  As I mentioned before, this was my first time there and while it was for work and most of my time was spent in the hotel and in conference rooms, we did venture out a bit!  All photos were taken with my Iphone, so admittedly not the best quality but I really wasn't up to carting around my real camera.

So here we go....

My hotel!

The Carousel bar in the bottom of my hotel!
(Had a video but couldn't get it posted!  The seat actually move around the bar...very cool.)

the awesome-amazing-delicious restaurant we tried the first night

Can't remember where I took this one...

blurry photo of Bourbon Street...on a Wednesday night

More interesting sights on Boubon Street...

Can't go without visiting this famous place...

Mmmmmm.....

Shopping...

Dueling piano bar on Bourbon Street Thursday night

Not a great photo but there was amazing music EVERYWHERE and crowds gathered...

All in all a great time and an interesting place but I think once is enough!

Hope everyone is doing well and staying cool!

*take care and see you in a week*

She's alive for realz.....and the joy of autographed books!

I'm alive, I swear.  I am.

But apparently my home internet is not.  It seems every.single.time it rains or there's a serious thunderstorm, our high speed DSL goes out.  Not just a little either.  Like need to have a tech come to your house to fix something under the ground type of fix.  Fun stuff.  And they always think it's our modem.  Seriously.  So now we're in the process of making sure it's NOT our modem so they will come out.  I know nothing about this kind of thing so some handy family members are coming over tonight to assess the situation.  I love technology.  Actually, I really do.  Just when it's reliable.

AND all of this happened while I was on a business trip to New Orleans.  It was my very first time and even though most of my time was spent in conference rooms, I was able to get out and about to experience important things such as Bourbon Street and Cafe Du Monde.  I plan on posting some fun pics on Friday's post.

BUT you know what makes all of this better????  The package that was waiting for me when I arrived home from my trip.  Seriously, what's better than having an autographed book?  Okay, you got me, a FREE autographed book plus surprise bookmarks.  Yeppers, made my day.

Check it out...

And because I LOVE playing with my new Iphone app for pictures...

Avatar setting in pretty blue...

Sketch setting, pretty cool, right?

Black and White...always classic

BUT THE BEST ONE?

Why is it the best???  It's X-ray of course and with a name and book about death, how can it not be appropriate?

I can't wait to read this one!

Hope everyone is doing well and enjoying what is left of summer!  I'm ready for fall!

The Wednesday Book Recommendation

Wow...where did the week go?

It's been a busy week at the Chestnutt household with no slowing down in sight!  Lots of commitments, travels, and activities in the coming weeks so blogging will be less frequent, or maybe more so now that I've proclaimed it won't be.  We all know how that goes, right?

Well, onto my latest book review.  I branched out with this latest book selection, it's a NY Times Bestseller and I like to mix in a few serious, life changing books here and there.

But I have to admit, this week's review will be my hardest to date.  This book has me a bit torn and as I looked at other Goodreads reviewers today, it appears I'm not alone.  I found it really interesting how diverse the ratings were.  Most readers either LOVED this book and gave it 5 stars or HATED it and gave it only 1 star.

As for me?  I'm going with three and a half.  But before I get into the details, let me show you the cover and the Book Description first.  I love the cover, absolutely great, gorgeous images that speak volumes to your heart after reading this book...

Goodreads Book Description:
Mackenzie Allen Phillips's youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later, in this midst of his Great Sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend.

Against his better judgment he arrives at the shack on a wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. What he finds there will change his life forever.

In a world where religion seems to grow increasingly irrevelant THE SHACK wrestles with the timeless question, "Where is God in a world so filled with unspeakable pain?" The answers Mack gets will astound you and perhaps transform you as much as it did him. You'll want everyone you know to read this book!

My thoughts:
There were things I adored about this book and others that bothered me badly. I certainly have mixed emotions and I'm going to do my best to share both the pros and cons, in my opinion, for this book.

Part of the problem is the hype, before I picked this book up I'd heard how great it was over and over and over again, so my expectations were pretty high. And honestly, I was hugely disappointed, it just wasn't to die for in the way I thought and hoped it would be.

As for the story itself, the concept is great and the tale moving, but for me the biggest disappointment was the middle. It was like a vaccuum of creativity and I felt like someone else's ideas about religion were being explained to me in a boring format. It was kind of the formula of, you know about this, well this is why. And guess what? This is why this is why it is. I got bored easily and it was very hard to make it through these mundane conversations that felt too much like reading and not enough about getting lost in a story.

However, I have to say there were amazing parts throughout Mack's journey as well.  Even typing his name floods my mind with thoughts of his heart wrenching story and I wish he were alive and I could meet him.  I loved his character that much.

Not to mention there were moments that will forever live in my mind and make me think. Beautiful painted pictures and scenes that bursted of creativity that I previously mentioned was lacking towards the middle. I laughed and cried several times throughout the reading of this book.  And when I say cry, being a parent, I mean bawl-tears spilling down my cheeks-I can hardly breathe-crying.  So be forewarned.

All in all ~Was I moved? Yes. Did I think about some of the subjects for days afterward? Yes. Did I love the ideas behind the entire book? Definitely.  Could it have been even better?  Uh huh.

Anyone else out there read this one?  I'd love to know what you thought...feel free to leave me a comment.

Up next for me are a few less serious but fun page turners, so look for upcoming reviews on these beauties:

That's it for me this Wednesday.  Hope everyone's week is going well!  Half way to the weekend!

Is anyone else melting?
